There are several new wines that the Douro producer Lavradores de Feitoria has prepared for the beginning of the second half of 2014, all of them in the whites category. A single-varietal Riesling and a Late Harvest will be released this month to complete the company's portfolio, which now totals twenty references (*). The 2013 harvest of 'Três Bagos' will also be launched, joining the 'Três Bagos Sauvignon Blanc 2013‟, on the market since May.
“The vineyards of Casa de Mateus – one of the associated producers of Lavradores de Feitoria – function as a testing ground, where we experiment with various white varieties. Riesling, like Sauvignon Blanc, which started out as an experimental wine and is now a success, was one of these cases. We thought that the 2012 harvest was “just right”, but as production is very small, we chose not to launch it under the Lavradores de Feitoria brand. At the same time, we received a proposal from Chef Rui Paula (DOC and DOP) and we thought it would be interesting to do something with him and at the same time “test” the wine commercially. At Lavradores de Feitoria, we wanted to create a dessert wine, and since we do not make Port wine, the option was to make a Late Harvest” , says Olga Martins, CEO and Commercial Director of Lavradores de Feitoria.
Colheita Tardia comes under the Lavradores de Feitoria brand, „Três Bagos‟, and is from the 2010 harvest. Made 100% from the grape variety Semillon It has a bright, lively golden straw colour. The aroma is quite exuberant, with citrus notes, nuances of fig and honey with some apricot. In the mouth it is very pleasant, fresh and full; it is not too sweet, which gives it unctuousness and a very complex finish. There are only 700 500 ml bottles of the 'Três Bagos Colheita Tardia white 2010'.
The „Rui Paula Riesling 2012 is a white wine that is the result of a compromise between the Douro terroir and the qualities of the grape variety. Vinified and aged in stainless steel (80%) and new French oak barrels (20%), it has a bright, golden straw color. The aroma is delicate at first, then lemony and apricot notes emerge, accompanied by a touch of petrol, characteristic of the Riesling . It has a very mineral flavor, good acidity and excellent balance. Very tasty, it promises to evolve in the bottle.
2013: the tenth harvest of “Três Bagos Sauvignon Blanc” will be available not only in the “typical” 750 ml bottles, but also in the innovative 100 ml tubes – Wine In Tube (WIT). A white wine fermented and aged partially in wood, which has a bright colour with hints of lemon citrus. The aroma is very exuberant, fresh and reveals tropical nuances such as passion fruit, pineapple and some asparagus. In the mouth it is very pleasant, quite fruity – with ripe fruit such as pineapple and melon –, less tropical than the aroma, but very tasty and long.
Unlike the previous nectars, the „Três Bagos white 2013‟ is a blended wine, which brings together three typical Douro grape varieties. blend Viosinho (50%), Gouveio (40%) and Malvasia Fina (10%) give it a bright colour, a mix of straw and citrus; a fresh, mineral and fruity aroma, similar to melon and white plum. On the palate it is very pleasant, fresh and full. It is balanced, has good acidity and volume. The finish is fresh, expressive and very tasty.
